More about this scene
The town grew up at the gates of the abbey on a low island amid the surrounding marshes, receiving its charter in 1142. Apart from the Abbey, the town is famous for the 14th-century triangular bridge, seen here from West Street. The streets now no longer have streams flowing down them, so the bridge is a redundant curiosity in a town with many good things architecturally.
