Grange Cinema

A Memory of Dagenham.

This photograph was taken from outside the Grange Cinema. There were three cinemas in Dagenham and The Grange was the smallest. We patronised all three in turn for the Saturday Morning pictures which cost I believe 6d (2 1/2 p.). The parade of shops contained the only bank in the borough and a very busy barbers shop called Viney. My Dad used to work at the Ford Motor Works and when he was on night shift would call at Coleman's the bakers in Goresbrook Road, front of picture, to bring us home hot rolls for breakfast. Just out of shot to the right was the Chequers pub, now alas demolished.

Yes I remember it well the times I have climbed up that old lamppost the Army and navy store on the corner had many a pint in the chequers pub if my memory serves me well there was 4 cinemas in Dagenham The Grange, The Princess, The Odeon heathway and the Mayfair Whalebone lane opposite the merry Fiddlers pub
I think you will find that the Mayfair Cinema, Whalebone Lane was built about 1933 and was later renamed the Odeon. It was directly opposite the Mayfair Cafe which used to have a Juke Box inside.
I started visiting the Odeon about 1948 aged 4 years with my parents whom always referred to it as the Mayfair. To my recollection it must have been the Odeon from about 1950 as I used to go to Saturday Morning Pictures from about then with my older brother. It was six pence downstairs and Nine pence in the Circle and the Ice lollies were just that only "Ice" one suck and no flavour left in them.
