Nostalgic memories of Delamere's local history

Share your own memories of Delamere and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I attended Delamere from 1994-1998. I have to say that Delamere was the worst experience in my life. I hated it. No good memories at all! I was bullied, tormented, abused and molested by other students to the point where it was a fight for survival. I didn't have a single friend at this school. Steven Lewis was the headmaster until 1997. If one child was punished he would punish the ...see more
I can remember the first time I visited the forest, it was very impressive. The smell of the trees, birds everywhere, and the sense of a wonderful peace. A really beautiful place, I hope it has not changed. A memory of Delamere by Pete Buttress

Correction to my stay at Delamere Should be 1945 to 1947 Not the Fifties
I spent 2 years there 1956 to 1959. I was sent to Delamere to help recover after the war - bad nerves and from other circumstances. I was always in trouble as I did not want to be there. I ran away twice - I was found trying to get on the train. Actually there was one person who was wonderful to me - Rose Lichenstein. Today, 56 years later, I still have the book that Miss Lichenstein gave me - 'Master ...see more
I was so homesick. The song "Deep Purple" made me cry because I'd heard it at home. We had two visitors the first Sunday of the month from 2.0-4.0. We went home for a month at Pesach. I wasn't allowed to go to my brother's wedding if I was to return to the home in the middle of the year. We had 1/2 p crossed off our account every Saturday and could choose sweets. That wasn't enough for me so I stole from ...see more

My name, way back in 1957, was Iris Finley. My overriding memory of Delamere was the feeling of being in a very old fashioned environment. I always felt that the way we were taught and the strict regime was from an era much before I was born. That is not to say that I didn't like the atmosphere, I just found it very strange and the numerous rules very strict and nothing like home. I can remember ...see more
