This impressive castle, again ordered by Edward I, was begun in 1283 and constructed on the site of the former Welsh stronghold of Dafydd ap Gryffudd. An English Borough that excluded the Welsh as residents was laid out also, and both Castle and Borough were enclosed within a protected town wall.
