Devizes, Market Place 1899

More about this scene
The large Market Place, with many fine Georgian buildings, is the central feature of Devizes. Benjamin Wyatt's 1814 Market Cross is a delight. The inscription tells us that a Ruth Pierce asked heaven to strike her dead if she had lied about money. Heaven did what she asked—as the inscription tells, 'She instantly fell and expired'.
