Memory Lane

A Memory of East Ham.

We lived in Milton Avenue but moved to Clacton on sea when I was 11 yrs old .
, I am now 80 !
I remember walking down Eastham high st. and Mum buying jellied eels from the fish monger on the right hand side above the shop a huge shiny metal fish hung .
Somewhere near the Station there was a corner shop and with our ration card we used to buy the faded chocolates that came out the window!
We used to walk to Monica Rd school through Plashet Grove park and I saw the first metal monkey puzzle climbing frame that we used to play on and hung upside down .
We used to wear smog masks to walk to school when the smog was bad.
My dad had an allotment at Beckton docks somewhere and with my two sisters we used to walk to the Woolwich ferry and go backwards and forwards ,thinking it was the sea as it smelt so salty ! That was all before I was 11 yrs old ,we had a lot of freedom ,if Dad was going to be a long time we used to stand outside a cinema and ask an Adult to take us in!!
