Here on the Isle of Sheppey life does not get much quieter. These buses going to and from Sheerness provided many villagers with their only transport to the main town on the island. The tall poles in the street indicate the advancements in communication technology made that year by the nearby Medway Telephone Exchange.

Eastchurch cliffs My parents bought a plot of land on the Eastchurch cliffs in the 1940s and my father designed and had built our bungalow called Glades End in Surf Crescent. At this time, there were very few buildings on the cliffs but then more people started to buy land and build. My family owned the garage seen on the right of this photo and were living here when I was born. It went under the name of DH Beard and Son and my grandfather started the business in the 1930s. He also ran the local taxi company which included the school runs from around the island. There were many changes over the years until the business was sold in 1963. I have many happy childhood memories of holidays on the Isle of Sheppey!
