More about this scene
The High Street, which forms part of the Roman Watling Street, has been devastated by road widening in the 1930s. Early photographs show a village of timber-framed buildings, of which a few survive, all on the west side of the road; they include a very fine 16th-century hall house and a range of timber-framed houses, now shops. The grey, granite war memorial in memory of the fallen of 1914-1918, with its rough-hewn finish, dominates the photograph; immediately behind is a small free-standing building which, although constructed around the 1930s, gained the distinction of reputedly being the blacksmith's shop upon which Handel based his 'Harmonious Blacksmith'.
