More about this scene
In the decades following the First World War, Exmouth reached the heights of its fame as a holiday resort, thanks to the greater mobility offered by railway trains and motor vehicles. There was much to do apart from sea bathing; as well as donkey rides, there were boating, sporting activities, country rambles, concerts and plays. Exmouth had established a reputation of offering alternatives if wet and wild weather ruled out a day on the beach.
