Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. Orders placed after midday on Friday 19th December will be delivered in the New Year.

Pencarwick Nursing Home

A Memory of Exmouth.

I was born in Pencarwick Nursing Home Exmouth on 7 December 1940. The Principal was Mrs M.E.Hodges

My mother left London sometime beforehand with my two elder brothers aged 2 and 6.
She left London to avoid the bombing.
I understand my mother lived at 2 Marpool Grove.
I was christened in All Saint Church on 18 January 1941.

I have been to Exmouth and seen Pencarwick House which is now a block of apartments
at the end of Louisa Terrace. We stayed at the Royal Beacon Hotel. We also visited the church but
unfortunately the museum was closed. I located Marpool Grove but the road appears to have been spllt into two roads so I was unable to find number 2

I would very much like to see a photo of the original Pencarwick Nursing Home. I understand
it had been a school at some time. Also if anyone knows anything about Marpool Grove would be nice.

My wife and I have visited Exmouth twice, last time was earlier this month. We think
Exmouth is a great place, the flower displays are a credit to the local council and the fabulous
marina is a must to visit. We will certainly come again.

My wife was also born at the Pencarwick in 1934. My father operated the St John Ambulances in Exmouth 1934 to 1960s/70s and I remember taking patients to and from Pencarwick in the 1940's. I remember it as a big white building where the Royal Beacon Hotel is now located at the top of the Beacon on a corner plot. I have only been back to Exmouth few times since 1950 so I am relying on a memory of 70+ years ago.

My mum worked at Pencarwick, I think in the mid 1930s. She remembered having to put tonsils wrapped in newspaper on the fire after patients were operated on.
