More about this scene

Opened in 1906 with a length of half a mile, the pier incorporated an electric tramway - one of its cars is clearly visible in the photograph. Alas, the tram service ceased with the advent of war in 1939, while the pier's seaward section was demolished after the war was over. Today's pier measures just 450 feet. Can you spot the 'stuck on' elements in this photograph, such as the car and the groups of children in the foreground? This was a trick often used by photographers at the time to make their views more interesting. Even the steamer in the background is faked!

Sixty Years On And We Still Visit.

Living in Southend meant that Felixstowe was a bit of a busman's holiday for us but Nan had a caravan there - close to the amusement centre on the old unmade road to the fort. I clearly remember the hiss of the Calor gas lamps in the caravan at night and the dulcet tones of the bingo caller: "Green line, four and two, forty-two." Memories that will never leave me! Convalescent Home 1952
After 2 months at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, I was sent for six week convalescence on the east coast in February. I am sure the medical profession said at the time - we have done all we can for him, now let mother nature have a go. Well I am 78 now and that experience of Felixstowe was in 1952 . Skateing Rink
Use to skate every Sunday morning. My mum and dads beach hut was in the bottom left corner still bowl there to this day. I can remember Vic macbride as well use to play with his daughter.

The Skating Rink

The skating rink behind the Bowls green mid left hand side of the Picture was at the time run by my father, Vic McBride. I could be the Little boy skating, at the edge of the Picture. The Whole area the Rink, the Beach, the boatmen "around the bay in a motorboat", crabbing at the Old Dooley fort. "Jacobs Ladder" the klandestine meetings with girls from the Ladies college. This was my playground all sommer long in the 1950's

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
