This image is a Reference Print: it has not been shown on our website before as it has not been optimised and therefore may not meet the quality standards we require for use in our normal product range. However, we understand that this image could be potentially important for genealogical, local history or architectural research and so we are showing it on the website for on-line research only. The photo may be available to buy, but needs to be checked and optimised before you can place an order.

Why are these different? All 300,000 photographs in The Frith Collection have been scanned, but as the photos were taken over a 110 year period on a wide range of glass & film negatives, using different photographic processes, every image has to be checked and optimised, before we make a print for a customer.

A Selection of Memories from Ferndale

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Ferndale

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My maiden name was Bertorelli , my parents were John and Lena and had the fish shop at 39 Duffryn Street. Lots may remember my older brothers . Frank , Lewi, John, Ronnie Mario-my elder sister is Julia and our youngest sister is Tania. The family moved to Bridgend in 1957 . Sadly the boys have since passed away but we three girls are keeping the Italian traditions going. I lived most of the time at 20 Albany Street before moving to Bridgend.
My name is Dennis Lewis; I am the boy sitting on the horse. I was six or seven years old. My brother, Jeff, is the boy playing in the background. We played in the park almost every day during the summer. I remember the photographer asking me to sit on the horse and make it swing so that he could take the photograph. How wonderful to it see it for the first time almost sixty years later!
I lived in the High Street in Ferndale from 1948 to 1961, my parents had a grocery/cafe next door to Margaratelli's fish shop. They were good years and I have lots of great memories. Ann Rasmussen, Marilyn Coopey and myself went to the Lower School and were fortunate to pass to Porth County School in 1953. If anyone knows the whereabouts of either and others that attended Porth County at this time, I would love to hear ...see more
