Oak End School

A Memory of Gerrards Cross.

I went to Oak End School from 1956
My favourite lesson was art, we painted on sugar paper laid out on newspaper on the floor, our paint pallets were old jam jar lids.
Anyone remember Miss Eldridge the music teacher. She wore the most amazing felt skirts with footprints appliqué around the hem.
Fish on Friday with red sauce and white sauce.
The huge tree with a rope on it, you had to climb up into the tree and swing down.
I was the smallest girl in the school when I arrived, and I was called Alison Gavin in those days.

Hey Alison Gavn I remember you - you are in my school photo - I was Valerie Schueler. Mrs Goodwin was the head and there was a Miss Tulip and Mr Parnell and yes I remember Miss Elvidge. Do you remember the ice slides in the playground? So many memories of a school now under tarmac!
Hi Alison & Valerie
I remember both of your names although I didn’t start at Oakend until 1961. I used to travel from Beaconsfield on the train with Christine Brown. I remember Mrs Parnell & her son was also a teacher. I think he always drove rather sporty cars. Do you remember Mr Oldring? We knew him as a family & he christened me back in early 50’s. Miss Goodwin was headmistress. I’m really racking my brain here to think of the teachers. I can picture some, but names just seem to escape me. I was Jenefer Smart back then. Such a shame the school is no longer there
I was at the school for 3 years ending in 1963. I was in the top year then (Upper 3 if I recall). There were three of us Mary le Mesurier, Christine Brown and myself. I was Head Boy and assistant head of house. Mrs Goodwin was Head Mistress. Ivisited the area many years later and sadly the school had gone. I remember the dining room and having to have our own napkin rings. Also the tuck shop especially the honeycomb. Ah memories. One teacher had a huge Lagonda car
I was at the school for about 18 months, from mid-1953, the went on to Gayhurst in Jan 1955. I don't remember a lot about the school, but do remember really enjoying classes with a young American teacher. I think she must have been there on a brief exchange, she wasn't permanent. She taught us lots about the USA. Don't remember lunch, but having to lie down on thin matresses on the gym/dining hall floor after lunch.
And hello to Alison - we lived two doors down in the Ridgeway.
Hello Brian
Good to read your reply, myn older brother Nick Gavin went to Gayhurst too. Sadly he died earlier this year of a rare brain disease, which my sister Tessa has also sadly inherited.
I loved Oak End school, and stayed to lunch occasionally (Fridays was fish with cook coming round with huge enamel jugs of “red sauce or white sauce?”, I always asked for both so I could mix them
I used to come round to your house and watch television in a huge wingbacked leather chair; I remember your parents and loved visiting. The Ridgeway, our neighbours, and life growing up in the ‘50’s brings back many happy memories.
Yes I do remember you Tony Hawes, we had to dance together I think practicing for a school production, I felt so shy and awkward.
