The Highway 1957

A Memory of Gerrards Cross.

This is a photo full of memories for me, too. We lived in Tatling End (Brokengate Lane) from 1941 to 1954, so Gerrards Cross was more than familiar to me! In the photo on the right, you can see the garage/petrol station where I got my first holiday job in 1960, and my mum was an assistant in WH Smith's just opposite (on left in photo). I remember the 455 bus that we used, also the bus turnaround outside the Packhorse Inn pub being built by German prisoners of war. Before that, the 455 used to come across the Common Road from the Beaconsfield direction. Gerrards Cross was always extremely 'posh' (e.g. Woolworths tried for years to get a shop there, but were continually 'blackballed'!). Oh dear, one could go on for hours....mostly sweet memories.
