Until the M25 and M23 by-passed Godstone, it had become seriously blighted by traffic on the Eastbourne road, the A22 and east-west traffic on the A25, which peaked in the 1960s and 1970s. It is still busy, of course, but much more endurable, and the village has regained much of its quality of life. This tranquil scene, with a cricket match in full swing on the village green, looks towards the south side of the green; the A22 is on the far left beyond the trees.

Fond Memories Of Godstone
As soon as I was old enough to drive, my Dad taught me, we used to drive down to Godstone from Kenley quite often and we would go to either the Hare & Hounds or the White Hart for a beer, sometimes a meal. In my courting days I would often take girls to either for an evening out, behind the White Hart is a footpath that leads all the way up to a small lovely church and beyond that to a lake. I still love visiting Godstone, it is a beautiful part of Surrey.

Michael Roffey
Michael Roffey, my GGGF was Head Gamekeeper on this estate until his death in 1907. Many of the Roffey clan worked and had cottages on the Estate. Lagham House is still surrounded by the moat from the 13c. Lagham Castle; the moat is a scheduled Ancient Monument.

Happy Childhood 1950 Onwards
I lived in Hillbrow Cottages on the Eastbourne Road from 1950 to 1970s. My father, George Mison, worked in the sand quarry in Bletchingley and mum, Elsie, was a housewife. There are only 12 cottages at Hillbrow and so there were about 7 children around the same age. David, Susan, Michael, Wendy, Ian, David and me. Lovely Memories Of Godstone
My Mum and Gran came to Godstone with me as a baby, we moved from Croydon because of the Second World War. My granddad, Alfred Sreatfield, now dead, had helped to build 13 Salisbury Road. I was christened at St Nicholas Church, and went to school in Godstone, and later in Bletchingly. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
