The Furness Railway Company once owned the Hazelwood Hydro. Originally it was known as Brown Robin Mansion, and was built as a private residence. It became a hydropathic hotel in 1887 following its enlargement. It was not licensed, and guests had to order their own drink a week in advance of their stay. This view shows the back of the building.

Woodheads Estate History

This picture I believe was taken from Woodheads. You can compare it with an earlier photo of 1894 of 'Grange over Sands from Woodheads' (photo ref 34123). It is interesting to see that the land below Woodheads was still unbuilt upon at 1921 although a new house has appeared on what looks like Highfield Road. Yewbarrow Lodge

Is that Yewbarrow Lodge (the original one) in the background? Hit by incendiary bombs in 1941, and burnt badly. We used to play in the remains as children - Sadly SLDC didn't rebuild as per Colonel Porritt's wishes, and now although serving a great purpose as a nursing home, is a ghastly eyesore.
