The swimming pool was finished in July 1932, but not officially opened until 18 August that year. That day, the key to the pool was handed to the Earl of Derby at the entrance gates by Lt Colonel Porritt. The Earl declared the pool open from the balcony, and after lunch, there were various swimming events.

This picture I believe was taken from Woodheads. You can compare it with an earlier photo of 1894 of 'Grange over Sands from Woodheads' (photo ref 34123). It is interesting to see that the land below Woodheads was still unbuilt upon at 1921 although a new house has appeared on what looks like Highfield Road. In 1908 the Woodheads Estate had land sloping down to Fernleigh Road and Kentsbank Road. I am ...see more
We were married here in 1994.
Is that Yewbarrow Lodge (the original one) in the background? Hit by incendiary bombs in 1941, and burnt badly. We used to play in the remains as children - Sadly SLDC didn't rebuild as per Colonel Porritt's wishes, and now although serving a great purpose as a nursing home, is a ghastly eyesore.
