The original pele tower erected by William, Lord Greystoke in 1353 can be seen here at the rear of the building. During the 17th and 18th centuries the castle was extended, and in 1839 Anthony Salvin designed and supervised the erection of a mock-Elizabethan front. Salvin returned to Greystoke in 1868 to carry out restoration work following a fire.
