More about this scene

Hubert de Burgh was granted a licence in 1230 for the construction of the castle. However, it was completely re-built in the time of Edward III. Little now remains of the massive structure that once stood on this site, although two of the towers may still be seen. A number of Plantagenet kings and their wives were associated with the castle. The building was immortalised by the artist John Constable.

The High Street
The garage belonged to my mum's cousin and on the opposite side of the road or thereabouts my grandma's sister lived who could be seen pushing an old barrow around Hadleigh, wearing white plimsoles during the fifties. Just next door to the garage was Jim's cafe and a couple of cottages prior to the garage development where the church sexton lived if my memory serves me right. Yesterday
Hi, Grandad, Alf Bainbridge, had Rogers Farm, by the Tarpots. He had been transferred from Laindon, now called Basildon, by compulsory purchase and enjoyed the smallholding up the lane behind the C W S factory, about the time a steamroller came down the hill and crashed into the lampost finishing in the ditch! Alf had a flatbed, with Dick the horse between the shafts and used to like a drink of mild at the Waggon ...see more

Gallagher's Butchers Shop
I didn't move to Hadleigh until 1963, but Gallaghers butchers was still there on the corner opposite the church. It is now a kitchen and bathroom units shop.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
