More about this scene

This scene again shows The Castle Hotel, but from the west. In the intervening five years since H167010 was taken, the Esso Garage has obviously expanded, although the cottages and shops on the right are little changed. Cars have become sleeker, but note the price of the one shown on the forecourt - a snip at £226! The street lamp in this picture is less decorative than the one in the earlier view.

Memories of Hadleigh, High Street c1960

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Hadleigh, High Street c.1960

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

The garage belonged to my mum's cousin and on the opposite side of the road or thereabouts my grandma's sister lived who could be seen pushing an old barrow around Hadleigh, wearing white plimsoles during the fifties. Just next door to the garage was Jim's cafe and a couple of cottages prior to the garage development where the church sexton lived if my memory serves me right. Coming back toward the bottom ...see more
I didn't move to Hadleigh until 1963, but Gallaghers butchers was still there on the corner opposite the church. It is now a kitchen and bathroom units shop.
i was born in Hadleigh in1956, my grandfather worked at Gallaghers butchers which from my memory was back this side of the Esso petrol station.
The Esso  petrol station on the left is now a Macdonalds eating place.
