Nostalgic memories of Hampstead's local history

Share your own memories of Hampstead and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I use to attend Sunday School at the Parish Church you can see at the top of the hill and then go and visit my Grandmother who lived in Golden Yard directly opposite the church many times during the early Fifties.
I believe I can remember drinking in the bar of Jack Straw's Castle in the Fifties, although according to your caption it was destroyed in the war and not rebuilt until the Sixties. What I remember particularly was a wide stairway that just went up to the ceiling. It was, I thought, a well known feature of the place . Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any pictures of the inside to confirm this. Any ideas?
I was born in Lymington Rd, West Hampstead. My dad was employed by the council. I later worked for Fotoco, Finchley Rd and R.Fox, Hampstead, went on to be a chauffeur, a bus driver, and an ambulance driver. I also worked at Bennetts in Oxford St, John Cooper, I used to go out for pint or 2 on Finchley Rd and the West End, does anyone know where Mike the Flower moved to as he was an old mate. His family had a flower stall outside Finchley Rd tube station - he lived down Rosemont Rd.
This magnificent brick built church must surely be the finest example of brick architecture in the country. My nephew, Nick Arbin, and his bride Johanna chose it as the venue for their wedding on June 2nd 2012. It is an absolutely superb Grade 1 listed building that has been the subject of a restoration since its de-consecration. Some eighty or so guests attended the wedding ...see more
I also remember Miss Betts and Miss Lloyd and her dog. Pat Weedon must have been there at the same time as me. I was then Linda Roberts number 61!
