Wells House
A Memory of Hampstead.
I was born in Hampstead in 1949 and lived with my parents in Wells House, Well Walk. It was a very happy period in my life. I attended New End Primary school and my Mum worked in New End Hospital
My Dad use to take me to Whitestone Pond to sail my toy yacht and often in the Summer we would walk to Kenwood across Hampstead Heath to play cricket.
My Grandparents all lived in Hampstead. One lived in a rented cottage in Golden Yard just off Hampstead High Street which has always attracted tourists from all over the world. My other grandparents lived at the top of Parliament Hill, a stone's through from the Heath and where I spent many happy summers staying with my grandparents during the school holidays. We often went to the Lido on the Heath to swim and standing on Kite Hill watching the fantastic kite's flying and admiring the view over London. My grandfather loved walking so I was often taken for long walks across the Heath.
One of the great benefits of Hampstead was seeing famous film and tv stars who lived in Hampstead. Peter Sellar's wife lived opposite my grandmother's cottage within Golden Yard and I would sometimes speak to their children when visiting my grandmother.
The memories of Hampstead will remain with me for ever. It's a wonderful place.
