More about this scene
The King's Arms (right, and now no longer a pub) was the scene of the Haslemere Riot and the murder of Inspector William Donaldson on 28 July 1855. Some of the two hundred navvies engaged in building the Portsmouth Railway line were drinking here late one evening, when Donaldson attempted to enforce closing time, and was struck down by a blow from an iron plough bolt. The killer was transported for twenty years, and four others involved in the affray were sentenced to hard labour and penal servitude. When the railway finally opened in January 1859, a celebratory dinner was held at the White Horse Hotel (next door).
