Haslemere, The Water Seller 1888

More about this scene
For us today, with water spurting from taps in sinks, basins and baths, it is hard to imagine the time and labour that used to be involved in collecting and fetching water. Buckets slung on yokes were used in prehistoric times, and were still being used by the Victorians. Going to the stream or well was a daily task, and carrying the buckets was hard work, especially after a day spent working in the fields. The water seller was a regular caller at many dry, heathland villages, where water was at a premium. Here we see him filling a cottager's bucket with water from his barrel.
