Note the sign for Southdown Buses, and a reminder that the last boat sails at 8.45 (left). The island railway opened in the 1860s, crossing to Hayling from Havant over a wooden bridge. Before cars and buses the railway was the main means of communication with the island. The line closed in 1963. Hayling Island is 4 miles long and 10 square miles in all, with popular sandy beaches in the south.

Wow.. seeing this awesome photograph transports me back in time because in this year I would have been taking this very ferry over from the Southsea side after taking the trolley bus and regular bus from the North End in Portsmouth to make the long trip to Hayling.
