Holidays In Creek Road

A Memory of Hayling Island.

In 1960 and 1961 I spent holidays in Creek Road. I stopped in a wooden bungalow called MEON. In the photo of Creek Road I remember the white building was an amuesment hall. I clearly remember Eastoke and the club. In the morning I went down the steps by the club and rode on my bike on the beach. I well remember the ferry to Southsea, and the sand dunes by the ferry and of course the ferry inn. Cycling in the evening to Langstone Harbour to watch the evening train. I would watch it puff away and over the wooden bridge which in the end was the reason for closing the line. I remember a pub near the end of Creek Road, it was very modern. Alone on my bike I travelled all around the island, the fair was of special interest. Wonderful sunsets and total freedom filled a fourteen year old boy with wonder and a strange sort of contentment. In 1964 I returned with friends in a car and even slept the night in the car in a car park on the beach near the fair, but the magic had gone. The island was still great, but those magical wonderous years of a bike with a Sturmey Archer three speed had gone.
