Share your own memories of Hayling Island and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

I went to Hayling Island Suntrap Residential School run by the borough of Harringay . I believe it was around 1975. I stayed there for about 12 to 18 months. I had chronic asthma and people thought it would be best to go to Suntrap for the sea weather. I had a lovely time there and certainty improved my health. The teachers were very caring and though I was around 8 to 9 at the time, overall was a good ...see more
Does anyone remember my mum Jean Manning? She was sent to the school before she had really bad psoriasis all over her body. She was only a young girl when she was sent there from London to the school. Mum would love to hear from any one that remembers her so she can share her memories with as she very alone at the moment due to her losing her sight which is heart breaking for her. Would love to hear back from anyone at all? Many thanks again 🙏 Michele Manning
My parents and I spent several vacations at Higworth farm caravan camp in the early/ mid 50's. I remember my Father having to get out of the coach, along with others, to lighten the load to cross the bridge. On the way to the beach we passed a dairy ice cream stand which had the best strawberry ice cream ever. My Father and I would go on the rides while my Mother added to our every day china set by winning at Bingo.
I was at sun trap at the age of about 7 or 8 years old .I was. born in 1943 and was sent there after having a very serious. Illness.some happy memories but mostly remembering how hard it was for a small little girl .How hard it was going back to my school at my home town missing all the schooling and never being able to catch up with the other children .Remembering walking along the beach what ever the ...see more
It was 2nd June 1961. A magical summer evening. I was on holiday and had my bike. I rode to Langstone Harbour station and waited for the train. The little Stroudley loco came to a halt on it's way from Havant to Hayling, only one or two passengers got on. It puffed off and across the bridge. I then cycled off. When I came on holiday again the railway had gone, and the loco was displayed outside of a pub.

I just had contact recently with a girl that went to Suntrap at the same time as me. Her name is Olwyn Weaver. My name is Nicholas Brown. I attended ST school from mid April 1967 to July 1968. It was a school that I remember had good values and disciplined approach to living. A wonderful setting but not well exploited by way of involvement with the local community or integration. It ...see more
The decision was made to take the single availability at SANDY POINT HOSPITAL for my precious son Anthony (ANT's) to go to SANDY POINT HOSPITAL ladies ward. He had 'high dependency' needs which made leaving him in someone else's care very upsetting. By the afternoon of the day of admission I could not hold back my joy and relief for the fantastic care that was given to my now late son's , care. The ...see more
I stayed at the Suntrap home when I was about 7 which would have been 1951 . I was only there for a few months to try to improve my general health . I can still remember lining up every morning for a spoonful of malt and cod liver oil and the spoons being washed in a bucket of water ready for the next child in line ! The man who looked after us lived in one of the cottages near the school and was part of ...see more
My Dad Ray New recalls being sent to Suntrap School, Hayling Island round about 1948, as he was "delicate". He would have been about 9-10 years old. He recalls helping to manually drain the chests of asthmatic children. He has a photograph of a boys' cricket team from those days and in it he believes is Mr Gough, and another teacher who played cricket at county level for Hampshire. There are a ...see more
