Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital, Sandy Point
A Memory of Hayling Island.
From 1944 to 1947, aged four to seven, I had tuberculosis and was a patient at Lord Mayor Treloar's Hospital in Alton, during which time I spent six months at the convalescent hospital in Sandy Point. Visiting was still restricted to nine Sundays per year, but while I was there my parents and younger brother spent their summer holiday in a boarding house on the island and used to come to see me, when the other children and I were allowed in the grounds, through the fencing.
I am writing my memoirs for my children and grandchildren but cannot find very much at all about the hospital. I believe Lord Treloar bought a large house which stood at Sandy Point; does anyone know anything about this house? Was it called Sandy Point House? When was it demolished? Does anyone know anything about the day-to-day life of the hospital? I have no memories at all, and have been told that I have shut them out. I really should be most grateful for anything you might be able to tell me about the hospital, its origins and its demise. Thank you.
