My Grandmother Had A Boarding House

A Memory of Hayling Island.

My grandmother had a boarding house on Grand Parade on Hayling Island through the fifties into the sixties. Our summer holidays every year were to visit her in Hayling Island with all our extended large families with cousins.
We would walk down Webb lane or Bound lane to the beach every day in the early morning beach combing. Other times play hide and seek around all the beach huts along the beach.
In the afternoons with the whole families (uncles and Aunts) on the beach we would go off to play on the putting green just off the beach area near Eastoke.
At night time we would all venture up the Sea Front to the fairground on the big wheel, dodgems, and old penny slot machines.
Other times we would catch the open air top ferry bus up to Langstone Harbour to catch the ferry for Southsea, and then catch another open air bus down Ferry road to the Amusement park or walk on South Parade Pier or Clarence Pier in Southsea.
I can remember going across one day to visit the Victory Ship in Portsmouth harbour dry dock which was in front of the Navy base.
We use to walk down to Eastoke along the beach and walk under the large concrete wall that was in Eastoke to stop the waves going onto the road. We would have to judge the incoming waves to run between the dry areas under the concrete wall as the large waves come in. Afterwards we would walk back through Mengham to Bound lane and down to Grand Parade which was a long walk but with very large nice houses and gardens.
Happy carefree days in the past.
