More about this scene
The central thoroughfare of the New Town of Hemel Hempstead, in the prosperous mid-sixties when we'd reputedly 'never had it so good'. The building of the new town centre had been designated a priority in 1951, and the market moved here in 1955. The first major chain store to occupy premises in the new shopping centre, Woolworth's, was quickly followed in 1956 by the Co-operative Stores and Sainsbury's, and in the following year by Timothy Whites, Boots Chemists and W H Smiths. This mid-summer picture was obviously taken on a warm day, judging by the pedestrians in light clothing and the number of open windows in the offices above Dorothy Perkins and Burton's tailor shop.
