More about this scene

Beneath massive trees a woman cyclist chats to a villager and her child (center left). On the right is the Castle Hotel, named after Hornby Castle overlooking the River Wenning. The lower parts of the tower date from the 13th century, but it was re-built in the 19th century. When the castle was left empty it became rat-infested. On my visit to the strong room, I was fascinated to see tiny pipistrelle bats. The railway station, demolished in 1968, stood on the old drove road leading to the fells we can just see in the background.

A Selection of Memories from Hornby

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Hornby

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I have a photo of my great-grandfather John Richard (Dick) Erskine outside the Castle Hotel, Hornby in 1909 with two young Scouts named Lawrence and Hector Todd (born 1900 and 1901 approx). They all formed part of the 1st Lancaster Troop. If anyone has any information about Dick Erskine (especially post 1945), I would love to hear from them as am researching the family history.
My memories are of dancing in the Castle Hotel, in the upstairs ballroom before the new vilage hall was built.
