More about this scene
This elevated site was settled by many early peoples, including the Brigantes, the Belgae and the Romans. The commanding view of the town led to number of schemes to erect a monument: the first was to have been the Victoria Prospect Tower in 1849. Objections kept the hill clear until 1899, when this new tower (which raised the view from 900 feet to a thousand feet above sea level) was opened on 24 June. At its base the tower is four feet thick. Stone came from the Crosland Hill quarry. During renovations in 1960 the top section was removed, and the tower now stands at a height of 996.7 feet above sea level.
