Most of the permanent chalets were raised on piers, like this one where a young boy smiles for the camera. In 1953 the sea broke through the defences, causing great distress and some loss of life. Since then the sea walls have been raised, making it impossible to get sea views from the low-lying chalets.

My grandparents owned a beachfront bungalow and every summer from the year I was born, 1960, to when they sold it in 1970, we spend summers there. My uncle Steve owned a bungalow in Jaywick Sands, "Abijan", at 18 Lavender Walk where I spent my childhood bank holidays and annual six week school holiday between 1945 and 1953 and occasionally short breaks in later years, we got to know most of the holidaymakers in Lavender walk as most like us would visit at every opportunity throughout the year.

I myself live in Battersea London , I was about six or seven at that time, and I had never seen the sea befor. Their was a neighbour who had a girl called yvonne and her brother malcombe and they asked my mother whether they could take me on holiday with them. Jaywick has always been a very special place for me and most of my happiest childhood memories are from when my sister, myself, my parents and grandparents and our dog Sally would have our annual holiday there in the first week in June. We stayed in a lovely bungalow in Lake Way called 'Many Happy Returns' which we always called our Little Mauve House due to its colour. :)
