Primary School

A Memory of Kirkconnel.

My name is Jean King - although when I attended primary school in kirkconnell I was known as Sheena Campbell. That was in 1959 to 1961 when we moved to Mansfield in England.
I have a school photograph taken in 1960 and some of the names I remember - especially Bobby Cleland who was my rival for top of the class!
I sometimes pass through the village on my way to New Cumnock to visit family.
Ronnie Caldwell is my cousins son - who fairly recently managed Kellogg Rovers - a team close to my families heart as my dad ( Simon Campbell) played for them in the mid to late 50's.
Does anyone remember me?

Hi Sheena,
Jim Smith here. I've not heard of you since we met at the QMC sometime in the 70's. I met your Ian around 10 years ago when he was Drumming for a Shadows Band. Oh where has time gone?
You, like me, are obviously keen to keep in touch with our roots
in Kirkconnel. I have to say your dad was a legend for Kello Rovers and you should be very proud.
I still live in Mansfield Woodhouse. I have 3 children, five grandchildren, and one little one on the way.
I thought when I retired life would be tranquil. Wrong!!!
I have never been so happy or proud than I am now having such beautiful offspring.
If you want to. Get in touch. Jim
Hi Sheena
I don't know you but I had a cousin called Sheena Campbell who was a school teacher and lived in Kirkconnel, Dumfriesshire. She lived there all her life until she died last Wednesday aged 85. I spent every summer there throughout the 60s and 70s as this is where my Grandfather came from and the rest of my relatives. My grandfather use to be a miner and also played football for Kello Rovers in the 1930s. He was headhunted by Birmingham City football club but decided to join Greater Manchester Police instead. His name was Robert Monteith Lennox. He and my gran are both buried in Kirkconnel cemetery. Our other family names in Kirkconnel were Gallacher, Campbell and Monteith.
