For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

My mum Janet Lennox and her sister Marion lived and went to school for a while in Kirkconnel as my grandfather died when they were young so my gran went to stay with family for a while rather than staying in Manchester. We had many relatives in Kirkconnel of my grandfathers so spent holidays there about 3 times a year. We do not have many relatives left there now but I still go up searching for gravestones ...see more
I lived in Kirkconnel from early childhood until we left to go and live in England when I was 12 years old. My name is Anne Colquhoun and I have a sister Linda and we had great times playing out in the street with all the other youngsters on Birkburn Road. We often went up the Killie as it was known to us in the warm summer months for a dip in the river. Our mums took up a picnic and although it ...see more
My name is Jean King - although when I attended primary school in kirkconnell I was known as Sheena Campbell. That was in 1959 to 1961 when we moved to Mansfield in England. I have a school photograph taken in 1960 and some of the names I remember - especially Bobby Cleland who was my rival for top of the class! I sometimes pass through the village on my way to New Cumnock to visit family. Ronnie Caldwell is my ...see more

I was brought up in Birkburn Road in Kirkconnel to parents, John and Joan White. We lived there until we went to live in England, March 28th, 1964. I loved living there with my gran 'n grandad; just down the road from us were Janet and Will White who had 11 children. My mum was English and joined my dad in Scotland when they married. I remember picking blue bells and being able to go where I wanted without ...see more

I travelled every year with Broughtons shows, and worked on the dodgems. We got cans of water from the houses near, I would think they have been knocked down by now. I used to go to the Italian cafe and walk along the river. We were made welcome. My name was Paddy, I was 20 then. Great days.
I remember about Kirkconnel/Kelloholm, everyone takes care of all children, my children used to go to Kelloholm Primary, they used to get bullied at first for being English, they changed their accent to not get bullied, no one knew they were English then, not that it should matter.
