More about this scene

The photograph shows the former King's Coffee House. Originally built by Richard Harding Watt in 1907 to house Knutsford's Urban District Council, it is now home to a restaurant. The tower on the top is a memorial to Elizabeth Gaskell. Born in 1810, Elizabeth Gaskell was to immortalise the town in her novel 'Cranford', which gives a wonderfully evocative picture of life in a small country town in the mid 1800s.

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

As a teenager I used to go the King's Coffee House with my neighbours, Penny and Harriet (before her family was moved to Brussels). We had such fun, pretending to be grown up and sophisticated; in truth the toasted teacakes were a real treat and absolutely delicious!! I till savour them today.
