Nostalgic memories of Luton's local history

Share your own memories of Luton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in the flat above my Grandmothers Sweet Shop in Wellington Street in 1955. I think it was on the right as you went up the Street just before the chapel that was on the left.
I lived in Lea Rd. and remember the blacksmiths there and the Jewish tailoress next door, very near to the Salvation army there. We had the churchill tanks in the war come down the road and the QueenMary articulated lorries carrying plane fusilarges. There were also the German and Italian P.O.W.s who made lovely carvings from perspex and cleared the snow in winter.I also remember dancing all night on Victory day as a young boy with ...see more
I am researching for a book and wish to get in touch with relations or friends of The Emmett family who lived at 147 New Bedford road South Luton during ww2. With thanks John

I was a " Resident" here in 1955 and would like to hear from anyone else who was there at that time. My strongest memories are of grueling hard work, from daybreak to dusk, bleeding hands and sadness. I scrubbed the whole place!! If anybody knows of more information about this awful place, I would be grateful to learn more, such as who ran it, other than Bedfordshire County. I cannot recall how long I was there but I think it was at least a year. Is it still there and what is it now ???
A gentleman has previously written that it was Luton Citadel band who held open airs at the Corn Exchange but this is incorrect. It was Luton Temple Band who held their open airs here and down the other end of George Street, it was Luton Citadel Band. I know this to be true as I was a member of the Salvation Army at Luton Temple and I often was at these open air meetings.
The old town hall was burned down in 1919 during the Peace Day Riots, one of the great oxymorons of our time!
Any one remember the Central Youth Club in Waller Street oposite the indoor Baths??Had some great times there and met my husband there 55 years ago. The Freddie Arnold Seven band on Saturday night we would make the floor bounce with our ~~JIVING~~And us girls used to sneak in little bottles of Baby Cham.. Left Luton in 1965 to settle in Australia . Looking at the pics and reading the comments ibrings back good memories !!!!!
I have fond memories of Luton, I came with my mates from Markyate village on the 364 London transport bus to Park Sq. we would then board a red corporation bus for the swimming pool off the New Bedford road at Leaside, after a swim we would go on the paddle boats in Wardown Park. We all became Luton Town supporters as boys, KO at 2pm due to lack of floodlights, but what a great team. We always ended ...see more
