Nostalgic memories of Luton's local history

Share your own memories of Luton and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

During the summer holidays we would visit the outdoor swimming pool in Bath Road. The first indication when near to the entrance was the strong smell of chlorine and the sound of the two water fountains. No matter what time of year or the weather of the day the cubicle area was always cold and wet. We would undress behind a half door in the cubicle and take our clothes and deposit them in a green painted ...see more
In the days when we had "real" winters, (where did they go), Wardown Park Lake would freeze over and we would walk out over the ice and make slides. One year there were ice skaters on the lake and I borrowed an old pair that I had found in the attic but I had no ankle boots, also the clips would not hold on my shoes therefore the experience was not a great success. Sledging was a different story when we would start ...see more
I attended Denbigh Road school in 1944 at the age of five and had advanced to both junior and senior schools by the age of twelve. My sister Margaret took me in on my first day but I was not too keen on staying as I remember. My oldest recollection is collecting an oblong piece of cardboard from the classroom cupboard. The card had holes pierced down each long side threaded with a cord. We sat cross legged ...see more
In the 1920's my parents bought a new build property in Limbury, number 8 High Mead, the only detached property in the road (It cost £620.00), but being situated on a bend the property was lacking garden space as the land was triangular, wide at the front with a narrow pointed back garden. However my childhood memories picture it differently! It was as big a Wardown Park but probably no more that 25 feet from ...see more
I was born in 1939, many say that the war was probably partly my fault! My uncle Steven Garside owned an electrical and aeromodellers shop in Park Square opposite the Technical College and my father "Ernie" Russell had a woodworking business at the rear and a lean-to stripwood selling business where I helped with the machining and sales on Saturday's, it was situated next door to Brown's cafe where we ...see more
A Lutonian from birth, attended St Matthews Primary School and then Hitchin Road Sec Modern. A favourite past time of mine was dancing. I attended the Barratt School of Dancing in Gordon Street under the tutorship of Mr Gaddesdon. Old Time dancing, Scottish dancing and the Friday night dancing to the pop music the day. Have searched high and low and can find no reference to this dancing school. Also did ...see more
I was born in Luton at the St Marys Grove Road Maternity home in 1959. My parents had moved to Luton in 1949 following my paternal grandmother who had been bombed out of the East End. We lived on Humberstone Road, me and my parents and my four older half sisters. I attended Beechwood Road Primary School ( I remember Mrs Moore the Infant Head, Mrs Kendall, Miss Baker and Mrs Wright teachers and Mr Ley and Mr ...see more
I was born in Luton in 1938 and spent most of my formative years until 1965 living with my parents in their small two bedroom bungalow in Mixes Hill Road, Stopsley. I began my education at the Stopsley enfant school before progressing to the junior school finally ending up at the Technical School in Park Square (I think the official title was County Secondary Technical School aka The Tech.). From there I ...see more
Moved to Luton in 1935 where my parents bought a newsagents and tobacconists in Bishopscote Road in Limbury. Can still remember the war sirens going and watching people hurrying to the Air raid shelters in Blundell Road recreation ground. .Have pleasant memories of attending Denbigh Rd school and then Luton Modern school...later to become the Grammar school in1944. Happy child hood days. !
Looking for any memories anyone might have of Jack Lane's store in Luton which sold children's wear. It was a family run store. Jack's wife was Bessie and their daughters, Eunice and Sheila, used to work in the store as well. Would love to hear from anyone having any memories of my grandparents. I was born in Luton in 1959 and moved in 1962 to New York. Looking to recapture the past. Thanks, Haydn. (hbrill@brillassociates.com).
