More about this scene
Charcoal burning was one of the New Forest's earliest industries, though it is a rarer occurrence today. The charcoal produced had a multitude of uses, particularly in the smelting of iron. Elizabeth I became so concerned at the loss of trees, at a time when England needed timber for ships, that she passed a law preventing the felling of trees for charcoal production.
