More about this scene
Despite being an ancient settlement, Maltby was still little more than a village at the beginning of the 20th century. Then things changed. In 1902 the Sheepbridge Coal & Iron Co leased land from the Earl of Scarbrough, and in 1906 the Maltby Main Colliery Co was formed. At its height the colliery employed several thousand miners, and Maltby's population rose to over 15,000.
