Nostalgic memories of Morden's local history

Share your own memories of Morden and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

The store refered to was Leader Stores.
The store refered to with all the guns and fishing equipment was, I believe, Leaders Store.
.......at the end of the war, in my grandparents house. They then moved to Abbotsbury Road and we moved to a maisonette in Hatfield Mead. Went to the Willows Primary and the Willows Girls School for a year before we moved away. The only names of teachers I can remember are Mr Saunders and Miss Healey. Morden Park was great for catching 'tiddlers'. Hawes was the big department store, and of course, ...see more
Lived in Shaldon Drive, Morden during my teenage years and like a lot of my mates bought a motorbike. Then discovered Hals Cafe in Morden town centre opposite the Crown Pub. Absolutely lived in there after work and weekends. What a great jukebox, great charactors and good friends that sadly I have lost all touch with. Also remember a great barbers shop further up on the left where we all got great haircuts. A few ...see more
I attended The Willows from 1950 to 1956 . I remember well Ms. Benham. I have been trying so hard to remember one of my favorite teachers who taught history? Anyone able to name her? I wish I could say my memories were as detailed as some of those given. What I do remember was how awful the food was for a couple of years, and yes we were made to eat everything on our plate, until a friend's mother took ...see more
I was married at St. Lawrences Church in 3rd April 1965, what a lovely day it was, a beautiful church and the weather was perfect.
My father worked for a company called Kango Electric Hammers LTD after leaving school (in 1962) as a Lathe Operator. I believe he worked for them straight from school so we are looking at late 1962 - late 1964 as he went into the army in September '64. They were based at Lombard Road Trading Estate, Lombard Road, Mordon (or maybe South Wimbledon), SW19. Does anyone remember ...see more
These were my local shops. We used to live in the flats adjacent to these shops called 'Morden House', then there was the 'White Bridge' which went over the railway lines to the underground sheds. The first shop on the corner I remember very well indeed. It was my favourite shop. It was a camping/fishing tackle shop where I bought all my camping and fishing equipment. Can't remember the name of the shop now (does ...see more
Hi, my name is Jessie Peake (Nee Kent), I used to go to the Willows school between 1944 and 1952. The Willows was my favourite school, I can remember having to sleep on camp beds every afternoon .. boy, did that room smell from those that wet the beds ... One of the people I remember was a Mrs Lemon, a really lovely lady, you went to her if you was sick. I remember having the milk brought around the classroom, and in ...see more
I lived in Polar Road, South Merton, but at the end of this road was Morden. I went to school in Morden and my Headmaster was Mr How. I went on to Willows High School for girls. I later went back in the '90s and how much it had changed. My best friend, Alison short lived in Kenley Road, Morden and I could see us both walking to school at Willows. Jill Palfrey was my name then.
