More about this scene
This street is named after Dr Thomas Magnus. There are a couple of traditional stories relating to Thomas's childhood. One is that he was found abandoned in the parish church by some Yorkshire clothiers who were passing through the town on their way home. They agreed to provide for the baby and had him baptised Thomas, giving him the surname of Amangus, the name supposedly meaning 'to be maintained by us'. The second tradition is that Thomas was the son of a local inn keeper who had fallen on hard times. The Yorkshire clothiers are said to have concluded that given the right opportunity, young Thomas had potential for great things, so they offered to take him with them and provide for his education and welfare. Whatever the truth of the stories, Thomas certainly went on to do great things.
