Note the large gilt letters above Bradford House. This was one of the principal ways in which Victorian and Edwardian retailers advertised the location of their premises; on large city stores the letters were often six feet high. With the advent of electric lighting, adventurous retailers had their signs modified to take lightbulbs so that they could be lit up after dark.
