The Tudor Cafe
A Memory of Newbury.
I remember the Tudor Cafe so well during the time we lived in Newbury. As a teenager I used to visit with my friends and family in the late 70's and early 80's. It served good wholesome food such as omelettes and baked potatoes and you always got a huge amount of salad etc on your plate!! It was always so cheery and welcoming. I also recall Toomers right opposite which sold hardware. Toomers was absolutely massive as well. It was as big as a warehouse inside and even had a mock up front of a house at the back!

Jam doughnuts were my favourites and it was a special treat to have these at the Tudor. I also remember Toomers and Camp Hopsons. My mother would take me there at the end of the summer holidays and say "I'd like a school blazer for this young man" (very embarrassing). Another shop I remember, in market square, was Beynons with its wooden floors - the most fascinating thing for me was how the cash for purchases was put into a little tube and was 'whizzed' up to the accounts department and would then reappear with the customers change (at least that's how I remember it).
I also am a resident in NZ now Ruth Wilson, living in Sandspit, just north of Warkworth.
