Nostalgic memories of Northumberland Heath's local history

Share your own memories of Northumberland Heath and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

WOW! I am Yvonne Blake (ne Hoare) the memories here are wonderful and yes we remember the Odeon where my sister Shirley and brother David went while I went to Burtons for ballroom dancing lessons. We lived at number 22 Manor Road with my gran and pa (surname Page), we lived opposite Coshall's shop and our aunt lived next door, with sons John and Robert Parish. Does anyone remember Len's butchers on the heath? or the Spar opening and Mrs Graham who worked part time in the cake shop? I have wonderful memories of my childhood, I'm 58 now but remember it all so very well.... and the cottage hospital where I used to end up all the time!!! Playing out and the path way to Erith by the quarry, birch walk, I could go on forever because I remember so much. Just dont have photos of that time so I'm so happy to have found these sights.
I went to a Hall at the top of Mill Road for what I believe was a Methodist meeting place. My mum didn't know that I went there ,she wouldn't have approved but it was such good fun with many happy memories....thank goodness mum went to work! Does anyone else remember this?
Hi Does anyone remember the old fashioned style local shop half way down Brook Street in between the Coylers Lane and Belmonth Road junctions? The shop is still there but in a very diffferent form. The shop I remember was an old farm type shop where the rather large man with a tash served you. They was the only shop open on a Sunday in the 80's and I remember many a time being sent there for Milk. Tracey
My memory is of Barnehurst Avenue, where I was born in Number 48, and I had a great childhood from then on. I remember playing in the road as there were not many cars, going to Martins Grove swimming and playing. I had lots of friends when I was growing up who all lived in the road, we had a great time. I remember waiting for the ice cream man on a Sunday, and playing in the allotments behind my house at the bottom of the garden. If I could buy a house down there now, I would.
