More about this scene
We are looking west, with the Great Wharf of the Basingstoke Canal on the left. The roof of the New Inn can be seen through the trees (left); next to it is Wharf House, built in 1815 as the wharfinger's residence by the Company of Proprietors of the Basingstoke Canal. Adjoining the bridge is the Cricketers, owned by Crowleys of Alton, which closed as a public house the year the photograph was taken.
