Close to where it discharges into the English Channel at Budleigh Salterton, the Otter passes some old buildings. Note the small white one, whose chimney indicates that it was a wash house. In pre-Hotpoint days, hot water would be boiled here prior to the laundry being physically assaulted with a dolly and mangled to within an inch of its life.
