More about this scene

This pair of windmills stand on Outwood Common: a post mill with four double-shuttered spring sails and a roundhouse protecting the trestle, and also a tall weatherboarded smock mill. The smock mill collapsed in 1960. The post mill was built in 1665, and survives in full working order. There is an old story that the glow in the sky caused by the great fire of London was observed from the mill. Listed Grade I, it is privately owned and open to visitors.

A Selection of Memories from Outwood

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Outwood

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I am trying to trace anyone who might be able to throw some light on my Father's childhood....which he spent in Outwood from roughly 1936 to 1943/44..and a bit after. His name: Walter Alfred Bennett (born 1929). Apparently he was fostered by 3 different families during this time, but mainly by the Shergolds, who worked at the post office. Other foster mums were a Mrs Bryant and a Mrs Barden ( who ...see more
My name is Sally Rufus (nee Bell). I lived in Smallfield Road from 1949 to 1956. I used to go to The Bell Inn every sunday with my parents and friends. I remember the fizzy lemonade in glass bottles and packets of crisps with the blue salt pack. They were good times as I remember the conquer tree and we used to take our dog Lofty a corgi. Our friends were The Tewsons, Lynne Smith and Family. Pippa and Duncan. It is many years ago but I remember we had fun
I was brought up in Bletchingley in the 1960s and my father Clyde Howard Willats was born near Redhill. He knew Outwood well and used to tell me the story about the two families who owned the two windmills, they were the Jupps and the Scotts. Apparently they were always at loggerheads and decided to settle their differences by fighting it out on two rafts moored in the centre of the pond!! History[and ...see more
I moved to Outwood 10 years ago to work at the Bell Inn. With its own unique charm I was taken with it from the moment I entered. Originally run by a Mr. John Lane the pub was sold a few years later to a private investor and was sold again to the brewery Fullers who have it now. The pub is a wonderful place to work in and the diversity of the clientele make it so from families with children to business people on their ...see more
