Outwood Village Stores / Post Office

A Memory of Outwood.

I am trying to trace anyone who might be able to throw some light on my Father's childhood....which he spent in Outwood from roughly 1936 to 1943/44..and a bit after. His name: Walter Alfred Bennett (born 1929).

Apparently he was fostered by 3 different families during this time, but mainly by the Shergolds, who worked at the post office. Other foster mums were a Mrs Bryant and a Mrs Barden ( who died in 1942).

He left the village in 1944 (?) and became a cadet at Arberfield but visited the Shergolds when on leave.

Would love to know more about his earlier years. He is deceased now. He told his family that he was orphaned in the London Blitz and that was that. He never wanted to discuss it.

We recently discovered that infact his mother died in 1933, when he was 4 years old.
It's rather a mystery.

Please send any information you may have bennett3112@hotmail.com
