I only found this site today. With Covid, I believe we are all dreaming and thinking of things that we never would have thought about before. I woke up this morning and thought about the Saturday night dances held at Parkstone Grammar school (girls) as it was in the early 1950s. I think they were run by the GTC and they were very orderly. I was a boarder at Uplands School, Sandecotes Rd.,Parkstone and we often went for long distance runs around and near the harbour. We got a real surprise one cold morning, I think 1956 or early 57, when we found the harbour iced up and we were able to skate on it in our plimsolls as the gym shoes were called. 1947 - I was born in Garland Road and can remember going to Blundles store. We moved to the Waterloo Estate when I was 4, we lived in 10 Wavell Avenue. In the 60's we used to go to a church youth club in Broadstone there were around 30 of us that used to hang out there and at a set of garages opposite the Silsburys house. Roughly that time, I went to school there when it was Ashley Cross Girls School. I had many a happy time there. One of our cookery teachers left to have a baby then went on to teach at the Girls Grammar School in Sobers Lane. My tutor group was in the Oakes, we were not allowed up in the attic areas because it was too dangerous, but they were used early on. The music room also had a stage in it. I ...see more
I have very fond memories of Poole. As a child we would spend our summer holidays near Poole Park. I can remember the little train that used to go round the park and the smell of it. I can remember the harbour and where the cranes were. I also can remember Poole Pottery which was a favourite place for my mum to visit. We would rent a bungalow or similar for the two weeks. These holidays were spent with my brother and sister and they were always happy times.
I attended Poole Grammar from 1956-64, and saw your house almost daily. The school then was almost opposite the house, it was torn down when the Seldown Bridge was built. The school was very overcrowded so we used the park in our lunch break.
This is not the Park Keeper's Lodge but home to my family! I'm not sure if it was the Park Keeper's house in the past but my family have lived there for the past 25 years. My Dad closes off the park every morning at around 6am to stop people parking there but it's not his job, just a part of living here! I was 14 when this picture was taken and loved living here. My mother Elizabeth and my father, Graham Thomson, lived on a houseboat in Poole harbour during 1950 and 1951. I was a baby and they had to move to dry land when I became a toddler! My mother used to tell me how she used to hang nappies from the sail masts on deck. I don't remember much, apart from the clinking of sail masts which I still find very soothing.

My memories start when I started school at the age of five at Green Road primary school which was in the same road as I lived and my friend Margaret Marchbanks lived right next door to the school. My other good friends Marion and Grace Brimecome and Marion Byles also lived in the same street. I remember as a very young child of up to 11 years old going to stay in my father's aunt's house in Mentone Road. Every summer we would go there. The early memories I have, is going on my scooter (which I was very proud of) around the roads nearby. I can recall a bakers shop nearby. My mother used to often buy Millers Pies, which she said were the best. My father who loved steam trains, was always intrigued ...see more
